Funakoshi Gichin

"The ultimate aim of Karate lies not in victory or defeat, but in the perfection of the character of its participants."

"When you look at life think in terms of karate. But remember that karate is not only karate -- it is life"

"Just as it is the clear mirror that reflects without distortion, or the quiet valley that echoes a sound, so must one who would study Karate-Do purge himself of selfish and evil thoughts, for only with a clear mind and conscience can he understand that which he receives."

Funakoshi Gichin (1868-1957)

What does Sen-Shin-Kai mean in English?

The club had the great honour of being named by Murakami Shihan from the honbu dojo in Tokyo Japan in 2009. Sen(洗) means purify, cleanse, scour, wash etc. Shin(心) means heart, mind, spirit, will etc. Kai(会) means group, club, society etc. Put together the meaning is deeper than just the literal translation. “Sen-Shin” taken together equates to “Zen”. As such Murakami Sensei’s wish is that “the members of this club purify their hearts through the hard training and philosophy of Karate-do”. This message is echoed loudly when  Sen-Shin-Kai(洗心会) is read with a full understanding of the meaning. This is a huge honor for the club and we would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank Murakami Sensei for all his help. We will continue to endeavour to adhere to the way of life evoked by the name Sen-Shin-Kai. OSS!!
